What are stem cells any way?
Stem cells are tiny parts of us that make up our bodies. We have had them before we were born. As the baby grows our stem cells wait to be programed to become a part of an organ.
What stem cells do in the body?
Stem cells can become any kind of cell they want to be by dividing in a way that makes copies of themselves. That is called self renew. They also have the ability to differentiate, which means they cause the mature types of cells that make up your organs and tissues.
Why are stem cells important?
Scientists are learning how to program stem cells to help cure or prevent diseases. They are also learning how to reprogram them to help the body.
