2/20 | The Letters
Dearest Courtney,
A curse? How queer. Those only exist in the stories of our elders. If you had told me this a few months ago, I would've dismissed it, but now due to the recent events in Drogheda, I'm not quite sure if magic is just a fable. I have found a book full of peculiar beasts. In all honesty, the book is a leather-bound journal with a large gold buckle. The name burned into the inside cover in strange characters. I cannot read any of the things written in the journal, however, I can still grasp the basic concepts thanks to the drawings. I must say, whoever wrote the journal has a very skilled hand. The drawings seemingly breathe a sense of life. What little information I have gotten from the journal has told me that the monster that attacked the townspeople is nothing short of disturbing. It feeds on the souls of the worthy, or at least that is what I have been able to decipher. In all honesty, this monster makes my skin crawl. It makes me question, however, why William is unworthy. If the monster feeds on the worthy, why was it repulsed by our darling Will?
My job is truly a stressing one. I have had little time to continue my research. I have been writing daily reports to my superiors as they are curious as to everything going on. Thus, I can only assume that you are fully aware of the turn out for Lady O'Sullivan's trial. Her countless affairs and indescribable homicides have placed her in a nice little cell in Portlaoise Prison. Acknowledging these transgressions has lead me to believe that it was she who killed our governor. Lady O'Sullivan must've known her way around his home as she did sleep with him. Not to mention, her style of killings is quite brutal which fits how our governor died. However, this is just a theory. I could be completely wrong.
My love, your failing health troubles me. You say you keep throwing up and are in a weakened state. What ailment affects you? I must ask of you to stop writing if it is physically painful. Please, Courtney, get your handmaiden to assist you in daily struggles. It pains me to read about your quickly deteriorating state. Within the next few days, I shall be receiving a quarter of my ensured pay. Once I receive it, I will send you a portion of it for needed medication.
